How To Overcome Writers Block

Overcoming Writers Block

There you sit working on your book, school essay, Article, or a group of blogs you are being paid to write, and suddenly you can't think of what to write next. This is what is called Writers Block. Overcoming writers block is something all writers have to deal with every now and then. Well what do you do about it? If you just try to write through it on the same stuff you were working on you find the block just gets worse. I want to give you some tips on how you can get past the block and back to productive work.

The first thing you should do is get up and step away from the writing area. Go get something to drink, make a bathroom trip, or just walk outside for a few minutes. Sometimes a break is all you need to get started again.

Next you can try taking a "back track run" and getting you brain back in the writing mode. Just re-read some of your work and often it will put you back on track and you can continue to write.

If that doesn't work, you need to just start writing something. It can be an email, a change of topic, or even just open up your word processor to a new blank page and write about having writers block. Just write anything at all, even if it is a poem or short story or about the day or week you're having. This will get your mind off what you need to do for a little bit. I often find that my thoughts drift back to what I was working on and I can get back to it.

If all the above still doesn't work you really need a longer break. I have been known to take a nap or watch a movie. I have gone out and done some shopping or tried a little house cleaning. Just do something else for a couple hours. Usually this will work out and you will be back in the mood to work again.

If you are still drawing a blank on what you were working on, work on something else for a while. If you are at all like me, you probably have more than one writing project in the works so a change of topics will generally get you back on the productive writing track.

If all else fails, take the rest of the day off and start a fresh the next day. Most of this will get you back to writing, but sometimes you just have to take time off and do something else for the day and start fresh the next morning.
